Old World Herbalism with Maria Treben

Old World Herbalism with Maria Treben

Last fall I was deep into studying my Czech ancestry and was particularly interested in connecting with culinary and herbal traditions that may have been practiced by my late relatives. A fellow herbalist pointed me towards the work of Maria Treben, who was born in Zatec, Bohemia, the largest of the Czeck lands in what is now the Czech Republic.

Vivienne's Citrus Honey with Rosehip

Vivienne's Citrus Honey with Rosehip

Herbal honeys are arguably one of the most enjoyable ways to consume herbs.

My kids go nuts for a warm spoonful of herb infused honey after dinner, and making it is a fun process we can do together without totally upending the kitchen.

My daughter Vivienne recently created this simple recipe with lemon, orange and rosehip. It’s a light, uplifting honey that’s ideal for late winter when you’ve HAD IT with chilly temps and grey skies.

Treating UTIs Without Antibiotics

Treating UTIs Without Antibiotics

Next to hormonal disturbance, urinary tract infections are the most common complaint I hear about in my women-centered integrative nutrition practice. Moreover, I’ve dealt with several UTIs myself and know personally how uncomfortable, limiting and persistent they can be.

Oven Chicken Fajitas

Oven Chicken Fajitas

Mexican food is like religion in Southern California. The ability to craft a solid taco or fajita is of vaguely the same importance as daily teeth brushing.

When I met met my husband, a San Diego native, I didn't even know that flaming tortillas was a thing.... I had much to learn.

Paleo First Birthday Cake

Paleo First Birthday Cake

I try not to be completely militant about sugar with my children, lest they binge on Coke and Skittles the moment they're free from my care. Typically birthday parties qualify as an occasion when I allow some conventional sugar to be consumed... However, not by a one-year-old. In my opinion, the digestive and neurological systems just aren't equipped to effectively handle processed sugar by 12 months.
